Due to varying climate conditions, swarms typically occur at different times throughout the year, as some species prefer a moist environment, while others prefer a warmer environment. Swarming is linked to the age and maturity of the termite colony. Most subterranean termite colonies do not produce a swarm unless the colony is at least three or four years old.

The life cycle of the termite begins with a mating flight, wherein swarming (winged) reproductive males and females leave their established colonies and procreate. After fertilization occurs, it is time for the “winged” termites to land and shed their wings, eventually going on to form a new colony. These termites go on to become the king or queen of their newly established colonies. The queen and king termites are responsible for all reproduction, and are therefore at the center of the termite life cycle.
